the festival of lights

Hanukkah is always a fun holiday to celebrate because it is one of the more 'laid back' Jewish holidays. With zero days of fasting and zero dietary restrictions there is just time for family gatherings, great food, games, and gifts! At my house we always kick off the eight days of Hanukkah by unloading the box of Hanukkah decor, menorahs, and dreidels otherwise stored in the basement. Over the years we have come to acquire many menorahs and lots (and lots) of dreidels to fill our dining table. This year we got to add Thanksgiving to the mix since they fell on the same day -- Thanksgivukkah is what is has affectionately been coined. In honor of the Thanksgivukkah (and ultimately, Hanukkah) holiday, here is some of my favorite Hanukkah-related coolness I have stumbled upon:

/Since the first day of Hanukkah and Thanksgiving fell on the same day this year, there was a lot of 'Menurkey' (menorah+turkey) talk going on. This was one Menurkey craft project:

/In other Thanksgivukkah news, here is a real-life Menurkey that was available for sale this year!

/Food was another category that was influenced by the combined holiday -- Thanksgiving takes on Hanukkah food were abundant. One example was sweet potato latkes. They were delicious!

/It's customary to have jelly-filled doughnuts (sufganiyot) on Hanukkah but I am a fan of chocolate stuffed instead. I found these doughnuts that are filled -- and topped -- with chocolate. They get my vote!

/These are the classic dreidels we have every year for Hanukkah. They are simple, but all of the colors together look so fun on a table. They are also INDESTRUCTIBLE and last forever!

/These are my favorite Hanukkah candles. They look so beautiful when they melt and are awesome all together in the menorah. When I am tasked with buying Hanukkah candles I always opt for the most colorful ones!

/These Hanukkah cookies are awesome because they have candy hidden inside. Since Hanukkah is all about celebrations, it seems fitting that even the cookies have a party going on!

/These glasses are awesome -- when you wear them, every light looks like a bunch of colorful Jewish stars. We have them at our house and they are so fun, even if they make you look super nerdy!

/I purchased this book for my sister for Hanukkah this year. It is full of Hanukkah songs that have the words changed to be about cats instead. After laughing out loud singing the new words, we decided we like the new lyrics best.

Hope you enjoyed your Thankgivukkah as well!

the giving of thanks

Thanksgiving is just days away and I am eagerly awaiting family dinner. While I am not a fan of turkey, stuffing, or cranberry sauce, I am a fan of potatoes, family, and holiday decorating. As you saw in October, I quite enjoy the details when it comes to holiday snacks and decor. Here are some of my favorite Thanksgiving additions:

/Setting a beautiful table is a great part of the holidays. This picture is stunning with gold utensils, white-on-white place settings and matching serving pieces. Not to mention the perfect spacing -- I live for details!

/This table setting is just as special but with a much more 'down home' or 'ranch' feel. I like the pattern on the table cloth and also on the plate -- the two florals work together to make the table whimsical, warm, and inviting.

/The detail of the plant and note with this place setting is simple but elegant and I like the idea of incorporating plants into the table setting.

/The large centerpiece in this table makes a beautiful statement and is simple enough as not to take away from the turkey-patterned plates. I like the rich color of the runner and the texture that it brings to the table as well.

/For a snack before the meal, I like the idea of mini cornucopias filled with a nut mix. This takes an earthy, tasty, twist on a classic Thanksgiving piece.

/When its time to serve veggies, what better way is there than by making a dramatic statement with a turkey design. So clever, cute, and delicious!

/When it's time to serve all of the dishes it's nice to see everything at once and appreciate the presentation and sheer magnitude of food at the meal. The addition of gourds, candles and greenery really warm up this table and make it seem even more plentiful.

/Thansgiving desserts are always fun because there are lots of clever way of incorporating pilgrims, turkeys and the fall/winter season. Here are some of my favorite ones:

/These acorn look a-likes are a cute single-bite snack that are sure to impress!

/I saved my favorite decoration for last -- pie crusts! This leaf-inspired pie crust looks almost too good to eat. I love adding a little bit of flair to the top of a pie just to make it extra special.

I hope you all enjoy your own Thanksgiving! Have fun decorating and table-setting down to the details -- but don't forget to enjoy the people who are sharing the holiday with you. That's the most important part!

I hope to hear your favorite holiday moments in the comments or learn more fun Thanksgiving food/decor ideas.

the clean freak

This week I want to share a passion of mine that is less artsy-fartsy and more neaty-freaky. I think the two ideas go hand-in-hand but many artistic people are messy and chaotic. I, on the other hand, am a member of the group that is artsy but is also a chronic cleaner and organizer -- and I L-O-V-E it. My family and friends like to make fun of me and my organizational ways. To me it's just simple: I like things orderly, clean, and planned out, leaving as little as possible to chance. It's funny because even my job title is "planner" (of digital media) and it suits me very well. I make my bed every morning -- it clears my head -- and I have to give my room a full clean once a week to feel sane and "reset." For me, it is the best feeling to re-organize a space and I feel so accomplished when I find a better way for a space to function. Usually, you can find me armed with one of these:

and one of these:

/This has to be one of my most favorite organizing hacks to-date. Kitchen drawers have always had a knack for hiding things and amassing piles of utensils that get stuck together, stuck to the drawer, and the worst, stuck behind the drawer. By diving the drawers longways there are perfect sections for each utensil and less chance for madness. LOVE.

/Another great kitchen organizing tip is adding more drawers. Drawers are a great way to keep kitchens clean and keeping the clutter out of site. Part of making a space look clean is hiding all of the little things that take up so much space. By adding big, deep, drawers to a kitchen you can store almost anything with ease and not have to dig through the back of cabinets when searching for that perfect serving platter. This picture even shows a cool way to store dishes in a drawer. So clever!

/My large shoe collection is a source of great excitement but also great pain for me. I adore all of my shoes, but finding a good way to store them without giving them their own two-bedroom apartment is a challenge. Enter IKEA. These awesome, narrow, plastic, wall bins are perfect for storing shoes and minimizing the space they take up. They also come in fantastic colors. What do you think?!

/Laundry rooms - or mud rooms - can also be a point of contention when trying to keep the house clean. In my house, there are always laundry baskets on the floor, on the dryer, on the kitchen table, on the stairs, and any other surface that could be used for folding. This awesome idea hides laundry baskets and makes it easy to organize loads of laundry before and after wash. Nifty, huh!?

/Jewelry is another accessory that has caused me a lot of organizational pain in the past. I always kept my jewelry in jewelry boxes and various pouches. Then I found drawers. And my life with jewelry has become way less stressful. Some people opt for wooden jewelry chests that act as beautiful pieces of furniture. I am living on a tight budget so I opted for clear plastic bins that fit nicely in my closet. Bonus points for wheels!

/Arts and crafts supplies, toys, bathroom products, office supplies, paperwork and a number of other items can be stored and organized into plastic bins. I am a huge fan of making clean-up easy and giving each item (i.e. markers, glue sticks, nail polish, printer paper, etc.) a 'home' of it's own. As I was saying at the beginning of this post, with a plastic bin and a sharpie marker, any(organizing)thing is possible.

/Lastly, one room in the house that often gets organizationally-neglected is the garage. There is so much valuable organizing space and yet so often there are piles of toys, newspapers, old running shoes, bicycles, tire pumps, snow boots and more random household items than any other room in the house (yes, even the basement). Shelves and countertops can be helpful in a garage, especially if you like to do projects and need a flat surface, but I always love when I see a garage full of tall, deep, cabinets that hide all of the clutter. Since most people aren't spending their Saturday nights drinking wine and dancing in the garage, it's okay to neglect the space a bit. That's why having giant cabinets is so great -- they can hide even the messiest of shelves. I'm thinking winter break project?!

I hope some of my organizing ideas inspire you to clean-up and clear out some of your own spaces. Tell me about your favorite organizing 'hack' or share your recent organizing story!

the scarf

Scarves are one of my favorite accessories -- almost like my fashion security blanket. When I'm feeling so/so about an outfit, I throw on a scarf and everything seems complete. As we approach winter (as I write I am currently experiencing the first snow in Michigan) it seems appropriate to discuss this awesomely warm outfit-finisher. There are so many different types of scarves to choose from and so many ways to wear each one. I've compiled a bunch of neat styles and ways to wear -- take a look:

/The most classic - and loved - scarf (as dictated by a survey of one) is the American Apparel circle scarf. Able to be worn a multitude of ways and comping in a variety of fabrics, this scarf never lets you down and can be thrown over any outfit Fall/Winter/or Spring.

/If you want to add a pop of color with an otherwise drab outfit -- this J.Crew floral print scarf is just the thing. I love adding a bold-printed scarf to a denim shirt or solid sweater to give your day a punch!

/Ruffles and scarves go together like peanut butter and chocolate. Perfectly. This style of scarf is comfortable and warm, while also adding a bit more flair than the average rectangle we are so used to.

/Even more ornate is this scarf --  which is truly more fashion than function. While it won't offer any protection from the bitter cold winter winds,  it will really elevate a casual outfit or enhance a dressier ensemble if the occasion is right. No matter the affair, the details in the pattern are definitely sure to garner some compliments.

/This chain-link scarf is a fresh twist on the classic knitted circle-scarf. Bonus points of you alternate colors or colorful yarn (see below)

/This is a fun new style I've seen around -- the loose string scarf. Making these scarves is as simple as wrapping the strings of fabric together at one point. It might be simple, but when complete, this scarf adds tons of texture and spunk to an outfit.

/This scarf if the love child of the woven chain-link scarf and the loose-string scarf. This example shows alternating colors and by making smaller links the fabric bulks up and can be extra cozy in the winter.

/If coziness is what you seek in a scarf, this is definitely the winner. A fur circle scarf wins the award for most chic looking while simultaneously serving as a pillow.

/Lastly, I found this wonderful chart and I think it's the most comprehensive display of scarf-styling options:

Feel inspired to get funky with your scarf and let me know how your scarf-adventure turns out!
Enjoy!
